Nan, Northern Thailand – Behind the Lens, Frame by Frame

A Family Visit, Mountain Landscapes and Everyday Life Through My Lens

Our journey to Nan began with a family visit. My wife wanted to see her brother and his family, who live in the mountains of Nan Province in Northern Thailand. We flew from Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport with AirAsia and landed at Nan’s small, easy-to-navigate airport — quite a contrast to the busy capital we had left behind.

Surrounded by forested mountains, Nan lies roughly 670 kilometres north of Bangkok, not far from Doi Phu Kha National Park. The province is home to around 467,000 people, including Tai Lue, Htin and other ethnic communities. We stayed at a hotel in Nan town, using it as our base for the family visit and my photographic walks.

As usual, my camera took me into the streets and everyday life of the town. What I particularly appreciated was how welcoming people were when I photographed them going about their daily routines. I always enjoy showing them the photographs on my camera’s display and asking whether I may publish them. Their positive reactions mean a great deal to me, and I never take that trust for granted.

The opening photograph shows the golden standing Buddha at Wat Phra That Khao Noi, overlooking Nan and the surrounding landscape. It is one of those places where I wanted to put the camera down for a moment, take in the view and simply enjoy being there.

This chapter brings together a personal family journey and my photographic impressions of Nan — its people, its streets and the quieter side of Northern Thailand.

Nan After Dark – Everyday Life at a Roadside Food Stall

Some of the most memorable moments in Thailand happen at a small roadside food stall.

Walking through Nan after dark, I came across this scene: a woman had stopped on her motorbike to buy a takeaway meal. The vendor leaned across the counter to hand her a plastic bag, while red and purple lights illuminated the little shop. Nothing staged, nothing unusual. Just another evening in Northern Thailand.

These are the moments I enjoy most as a documentary photographer. A brief encounter, people going about their daily routines and a scene that tells its own story without needing much explanation. The colourful lights, Thai lettering and motorbike were all part of the atmosphere I wanted to preserve.

Behind the Frame

I chose 54mm to bring the woman, her motorbike and the vendor together without losing the details of the food stall. At f/5.0, I had enough depth of field to keep the interaction in focus.

The real challenge was the light. Shooting handheld at 1/30 sec meant watching for the right moment when both people were relatively still. ISO 6400 allowed me to work with the available light rather than interrupt the scene with flash.

A Smile Worth Stopping For – Street Life in Nan

At a night market in Nan, Northern Thailand, two young food vendors happily posed for my camera. Their matching aprons, the enormous hanging fish and the bustle of the food stall made this a moment I wanted to remember. Encounters like this are why I enjoy street photography in Thailand.

I chose 30mm to include both women, the fish and the surrounding market. At f/4.0, I retained enough depth for the scene, while 1/640 sec kept their gestures sharp. ISO 6400 helped me work with the available market lighting.

A Smile in the Middle of Market Life

A motorbike, a busy market aisle and a smile that made me reach for my camera.

While exploring a local market in Nan, Northern Thailand, I met this woman standing beside her motorbike. Behind her, vendors and shoppers carried on with their daily routines, surrounded by small shops and stacked goods. She looked straight into my camera and smiled — a friendly encounter that made this portrait special.

I chose 70mm to concentrate on her expression while retaining the market atmosphere. At f/5.0, the surroundings remain recognisable. The challenge was shooting handheld at 1/30 sec in the dim market light. ISO 3200 helped me capture the scene without flash.

An Unplugged Night in Nan – Live Music, Up Close

No big stage, no elaborate show. Just three musicians, an acoustic guitar and a night of live music in Nan, Northern Thailand.

Inside a small music bar, the singer turns towards the guitarist while the percussionist keeps the rhythm. Their expressions and the warm stage lighting caught my attention. I wanted all three musicians in the frame without disturbing their performance.

At 57mm, I could capture the interaction between the musicians. f/4.0 provided enough depth, while 1/40 sec helped retain the atmosphere of the dimly lit bar. ISO 6400 allowed me to photograph the unplugged performance without flash.

Behind the Counter – Everyday Life

A small shop, crowded shelves and a woman watching the world go by.

Walking through a local market in Nan, Northern Thailand, I noticed this shopkeeper behind her counter, surrounded by household goods, colourful packaging and everyday essentials. Her thoughtful expression caught my attention. For me, street photography is also about these quieter moments of Thai market life.

A Smile Across the Food Counter

One friendly smile can turn a busy food stall into a memorable street portrait.

A Young Seller Surrounded by Watermelons – Nan, Thailand

Somewhere between the market stalls and the passing traffic, I found this quiet little moment.

A young girl sits in the back of a pickup truck, surrounded by watermelons ready for sale. The old weighing scale, woven sacks and everyday market details tell more about local life in Nan than any tourist sign ever could. She looked directly at my camera, and for a brief moment the busy street around her seemed to disappear.

This is what I enjoy about street photography in Northern Thailand: finding ordinary moments that reveal something about everyday Thai life.

At 70mm, I could frame the girl naturally within the truck while showing the abundance of watermelons around her. f/8.0 kept the foreground and background details sharp. With good daylight, 1/25 sec at ISO 160 allowed me to keep image quality high while preserving the market atmosphere.

Nan After Dark – Temple Life and Market Lights

When the temples light up, Nan takes on a completely different mood.

At night, a beautifully illuminated Thai temple rises behind a small street market. In front of it, local vendors sell handmade souvenirs, small plants, flowers and colourful gifts, while a woman quietly tends her stall. The warm temple lights, market tables and people going about their evening create a scene that feels very much like Nan after dark.

This is the side of Northern Thailand street life I enjoy photographing — not a staged attraction, but the meeting of local life, Thai culture and the atmosphere of the night.

At 34mm, I could include the entire temple facade while keeping the market activity in the foreground. f/5.0 gave me enough depth across the scene. With very little available light, 1/125 sec helped keep people and details sharp, while ISO 6400 allowed me to work handheld without flash.

Nan After Dark – Wat Phra That Chang Kham

Some places feel completely different after sunset.

In the heart of Nan, Wat Phra That Chang Kham glows against the night sky. The illuminated temple buildings and golden chedi dominate the scene, while scooters line the street outside and people move quietly around the entrance. I liked the contrast between the centuries-old architecture and the ordinary rhythm of modern Thai street life.

For me, this is part of the character of Nan, Northern Thailand — a place where Buddhist heritage, local life and the streets exist naturally side by side.

At 40mm, I could include the chedi, the main temple buildings and the street without making the architecture feel distant. f/5.6 kept the structures defined, while 1/50 sec was slow enough to work in the available light. ISO 6400 allowed me to shoot handheld and preserve the atmosphere without flash.

A laugh like this is impossible to walk past.

At a night market in Nan, Northern Thailand, I stopped at a food stall and was greeted by this wonderful smile. The vendor, wearing a bright blue apron over a colourful floral shirt, stood among trays of prepared food, cooking pots and bags of local dishes. Behind her, the market continued in a blur of people, lights and activity.

I enjoy these unplanned encounters because they show Nan street life as it really feels — friendly, busy and full of character. She looked straight into my camera, laughed, and for a moment the food stall became her stage.

I chose 35mm to keep the woman firmly in the scene while showing enough of the busy night market around her. At f/4.0, I could separate her from the background without losing the context. The 1/100 sec shutter speed helped keep her expression and movement sharp, while ISO 6400 was necessary for the available evening light.

Where Nan comes alive after dark

Under the blue market tents, the evening is already in full swing. A food vendor in a bright blue apron works behind her stall, surrounded by large cooking pots, trays of prepared food and bags of local dishes. Customers move between the stalls, choosing what to eat while the market lights illuminate the scene.

This is the kind of street life in Nan, Northern Thailand that I enjoy photographing. Nothing staged — just a local night market, people working, shopping and sharing an ordinary evening.

I used 35mm to show the vendor within her surroundings rather than isolating her. At f/4.0, I kept the main area of the food stall clear while allowing the background to fall slightly away. The 1/100 sec shutter speed helped retain detail as people moved through the scene, while ISO 6400 gave me enough exposure in the low evening light without losing the atmosphere.
